My husband and I love to watch movies together – its one of our favorite ways to sneak in quality “us” time. We love a good romantic comedy or action-packed drama, but what we have been most drawn to lately are the movies based on real life stories. We recently had the chance to preview a movie screening for Unbroken: Path to Redemption and absolutely loved it!
This movie is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling book, and begins where the previous hit movie Unbroken concludes, sharing the next chapter of an unbelievable, empowering true story of Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini. Prior to watching this movie, I was unaware there was a first movie. If you have not watched Unbroken yet, no worries – this movie is beautifully woven together and stands great by itself.
About Unbroken: Path to Redemption
After surviving a plane crash, weeks of floating on a makeshift raft in the Pacific and then years of torture as a prisoner of war, Louis Zamperini finally returns home, seemingly unbroken.
When the war ended, his battle began. Haunted by nightmares of his torment, Louie sees himself as anything but a hero. Despite battling demons, anger and alcohol, Louie feels obligated to participate in an Army tour to raise money for War Bonds. But as he focuses more on hotel bars than his public appearances, Louie is ordered to take R&R on the beaches of Miami.
There he meets, Cynthia, a young woman who catches his eye – and his heart. After a whirlwind courtship, the couple weds and moves to Los Angeles.
While pursuing every avenue of hope he can find – from trying to reestablish himself as a world-class runner to get-rich-quick investment opportunities – Louie’s wrathful quest for revenge drives him deeper into despair… and the bottle.
Hopeless and on the brink of divorce, Cynthia experiences Billy Graham’s 1949 Los Angeles Crusade where she finds faith in God and a renewed commitment to her marriage and her husband. Now, her most fervent prayer is for God to help Louie find the peace and forgiveness he so desperately needs.
Mommy Love Media’s Thoughts
Unbroken: Path to Redemption brings so many messages to the big screen. It is a powerful story of Forgiveness. Without sharing any spoilers for this incredible movie, it has a message of forgiveness that is the epitome of what this world needs. Our world nowadays is scary! As a mother, I worry daily about the things my children are exposed to and pray that God protects them for as long as He can. If we had been following Louie’s example of forgiveness then I believe our world would be very different today!
It is a real life story of how God’s grace can heal. There is no defeat that you can fathom that isn’t something our God can handle! One of my absolute favorite bible verses is Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight.” God is not here for the perfect people. He is here for the broken, the hurting…. He is here for YOU! Aside from Louis’ overall story of God’s grace, one of the biggest testaments to this is listening to Louis tell a story during the credit rolls that since the day he gave his life to God, he has never had a nightmare since. When you watch this incredible story unfold, you will see just how much this means.
It is a story of the realities of PTSD and how it affects our loved ones, even back in the 40’s! After a war, as soldiers try to transition back to real life and a family that was protected from knowing exactly what they went thru overseas – most, inevitably, struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). During this struggle, many question their faith and, in trying to forget the nightmares that haunt them, turn to other ways of coping – whether that be drugs, physical abuse or in the case of Louis Zamperini… alcohol.
It is a story that shares the Power of a Praying Wife. In the beginning of this movie, Cynthia shares that she prays daily and as she struggles with the changes of her transitioning soldier, leans less on her faith. But God is SO good, isn’t He? He provides moments and opportunities for us to get back on path with Him. For Cynthia, that was at one of Billy Graham’s revivals. After attending, she has a renewed faith in God and her marriage. She continuously prays for her husband and his salvation. God uses her to speak to her husband and she invites him to attend a revival with her.
FUN FACT: I learned, after watching this movie, that Rev. Billy Graham is actually played by his grandson, Will Graham. This is a beautiful tribute to Rev. Billy Graham and I’m sure a role especially treasured by his grandson, Will. This movie not only depicts everything that Louis went thru, but shows just how powerful Rev. Billy Graham was at using God’s word and promises to help heal hearts and find their path back to God, even in the 1940’s!
When you watch the movie, make sure to stay thru the credits as it shares photos and videos of Louis Zamperini that solidifies the story you just watched unfold.
