News of Hurricane Irma hitting Puerto Rico was heartbreaking. Hearing Hurricane Maria came thru only a week later was terrifying. We have family in Puerto Rico and the entire island has been on my heart. My husband and I want so much to just drop everything and go to help, but there is no way that I am aware of (at the time of this writing) to be able to do that yet.

People in the state of Florida have been complaining of having no power for a few days, maybe two weeks at the latest.. imagine being in Puerto Rico – they will reportedly be out of power for six months to a year! The destruction is a whole other heartache. Because of the damage and power outages, Puerto Rico has lost all communications. If you have been unable to reach your family, you may email the island’s disaster relief team at email@example.com. Please only send one email, no updates (unless contact is made with your loved one prior to a response email) as they are inundated with requests for help.
Our family has a pretty open dialogue and we discuss a lot of current events. We talked to the kids (ages 10 & 12) about Puerto Rico. My son’s first response was “Are we going to go to Puerto Rico to help?” I wasn’t prepared for that. I should have been. He has a heart of pure gold. It just overwhelmed me with joy that, as a 10 year old, his first, immediate response was to actually go to the disaster site to help. Once I explained that the airports were closed and there was no way for us to get there yet, his second question was “Can I have a lemonade stand to help?” Why yes, yes you can. It was at this point that I was willing to let him to do almost anything to help, because I never want to simmer out that fire of desire to help inside him. He is constantly giving away his clothes and toys to family members and friends that may have wanted or needed the item.
We have decided to raise funds and donations for Puerto Rico as a family. The kids will be going a step further and the funds that they raise will be going to make comfort bags for kids in Puerto Rico. Their idea was to create a bag of toys and comfort items (blanket, stuffed animal, travel games, puzzles, etc) to bring joy to the children in a time of such heartache.
There are several ways you can help us, as shown below. We decided to call our fundraiser “Faith-Full Hearts for Puerto Rico” because we are faithfully following our heart’s and the calling to help that God has placed upon it… and we hope you will do the same!
